Studies at the Open University
Open University courses are open to everyone regardless of their background or age. Open University offers individual courses, thus you can't take any degree from the Open University.
Studying at the Open University is considered part-time and all-round educational, so general student benefits are not granted.
Aalto University Open University offers courses in Arts and Design, Economics and Technology. Also a wide variety of language studies is offered.
Study rules at the Aalto University Open University are based on the Academic rules and regulations at the Aalto University.
Only part of the courses at the Open University is solely in English. Studying is offered all around the year.
Open University reserves rights to change the study program.
Evaluation of Studies
The course grading scale is both verbal and based on a numerical scale. It consists of the grades:
5 = excellent knowledge
4 = very good knowledge
3 = good knowledge
2 = satisfactory knowledge
1 = sufficient knowledge
0 = fail
pass (*) = no grade.
Certificates
You can pick up your certificate at the Open University office during opening hours and we will print it out for you on–the-spot in Finnish or in English. The identification card is needed when picking up a certificate.
User accounts
Your Aalto account name will be made ready for you to use on the day on which your first course starts at the Open University, if not sooner. After this date, you can obtain the account from the IT Help Desk. Please note that you will have to prove your identity at the desk. When you have your Aalto account, you simply need to activate it in the manner explained below.
You will need the Aalto account for WebOodi, logging in to the computers in the computer classrooms and into the wireless network.

Activating your Aalto IT account:
You should activate your account by going to https://password.aalto.fi/ (use your internet bank identifiers or an official ID card with a chip).
All holders of the Aalto account agree to comply with the Aalto University Policy on the Use of Information Systems.
When necessary, Aalto accounts may also be activated at the IT Help Desk.
It is also possible for you to active also a new Aalto e-mail account (firstname.lastname [at] aalto [dot] fi).
